The 12 Signs

Every sign belongs to one of four elements. The element is the deepest temperament of a sign. • FIRE — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Spirit, will, action, intuition. Fire is identity, vitality, the urge to express. • EARTH — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Body, matter, sensation, practicality. Earth is what is real, durable, useful. • AIR — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Mind, language, ideas, social connection. Air is what is shared, communicated, abstracted. • WATER — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Feeling, soul, intuition, the unconscious. Water is what is felt, remembered, bonded. Fire and Air are considered active / yang; Earth and Water receptive / yin. A chart heavy in one element shows where the person's natural energy lives — and what they often lack.

Each element appears in three flavors called modalities (or quadruplicities). The modality describes HOW the sign acts. • CARDINAL — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Initiators. They start things, open seasons, push energy outward. • FIXED — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. Stabilizers. They hold, deepen, consolidate. Hard to move, but reliable. • MUTABLE — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. Adaptors. They distribute, transition, change form. Flexible but scattered. 4 elements × 3 modalities = 12 signs. Aries = Cardinal Fire (initiating action). Taurus = Fixed Earth (stabilizing matter). Gemini = Mutable Air (changing thought). And so on around the wheel.
