If the signs are HOW we act, the planets are WHAT acts. Each planet is a psychological function — the chart shows where and how each one is dressed.
Lesson 1 of 5
Personal, social, transpersonal
We work with 10 main bodies (the Sun and Moon are called 'luminaries' but are counted with the planets here), in three groups:
PERSONAL: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars. They move quickly and describe the individual ego.
SOCIAL: Jupiter, Saturn. They describe how we extend into society — growth and structure.
TRANSPERSONAL: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. They move so slowly that whole generations share their sign — they describe collective forces.
Optional advanced: CHIRON (the 'wounded healer') and the LUNAR NODES (karmic axis). Mention only.
Lesson 2 of 5
The personal planets
☉ SUN — core identity, vitality, conscious will. The hero of your chart. Rules Leo.
☽ MOON — emotional needs, instincts, memory, the inner child. Rules Cancer.
☿ MERCURY — mind, language, learning, exchange. Rules Gemini and Virgo.
♀ VENUS — love, beauty, values, what we attract. Rules Taurus and Libra.
♂ MARS — drive, will to act, anger, sexuality. Rules Aries (and traditionally Scorpio).
In a chart, ask: what sign and house does each personal planet sit in? That tells you HOW and WHERE that function expresses itself.
Lesson 3 of 5
Jupiter and Saturn — the social pair
♃ JUPITER — expansion, meaning, faith, opportunity, excess. Where Jupiter sits, you grow and overdo. Rules Sagittarius (and traditionally Pisces). 12-year cycle.
♄ SATURN — structure, limitation, time, mastery, fear. Where Saturn sits, you contract and eventually become wise. Rules Capricorn (and traditionally Aquarius). 29-year cycle (the famous Saturn Return at ~29).
These two together describe maturation: Jupiter says yes, Saturn says not yet — and between them, an adult life is built.
Lesson 4 of 5
The transpersonal trio + Chiron and the Nodes
♅ URANUS — sudden change, freedom, originality, the future. 84-year orbit; ~7 years per sign. Rules Aquarius.
♆ NEPTUNE — dissolution, transcendence, dreams, illusion. ~165-year orbit; ~14 years per sign. Rules Pisces.
♇ PLUTO — death and rebirth, power, deep transformation, the underworld. ~248-year orbit. Rules Scorpio.
For transpersonals, the SIGN matters more for the generation; the HOUSE matters for the individual — it shows the life area where the collective force erupts in your life.
⚷ CHIRON — the wounded healer; the place of an old wound that becomes your gift to others.
☊ ☋ LUNAR NODES — the karmic axis: North Node (☊) = growth direction, South Node (☋) = comfort zone / past.
Lesson 5 of 5
Dignities — domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall
A planet is not equally comfortable in every sign. The classical doctrine of essential dignities gives a quick measure of how well a planet can express itself:
• DOMICILE — the sign a planet rules. It is 'at home', expressing itself naturally (e.g., Mars in Aries).
• EXALTATION — a sign where the planet shines especially well in one of its qualities (e.g., Sun exalted in Aries).
• DETRIMENT — the sign opposite domicile. The planet feels foreign (e.g., Mars in Libra).
• FALL — the sign opposite exaltation. The planet's quality is hard to access (e.g., Sun in Libra is in fall).
Dignity matters but is not destiny. Many beautiful charts feature planets in detriment or fall — the person simply works harder, more consciously, with that function.
