Module 4

The Aspects

Planets do not act alone. Aspects are the angular conversations between them — and they are the engine that makes a chart come alive.

Lesson 1 of 4

What an aspect is — orbs and movement

An ASPECT is the geometric angle between two points (typically two planets) measured along the ecliptic. The angles aren't arbitrary — they correspond to harmonic divisions of the circle (1, 2, 3, 4, 6…) and carry recognizable psychological flavors. ORB = the allowed tolerance around the exact angle. We don't need a planet to be exactly 90° from another to call it a square — we allow a few degrees of slack. Beginners use these typical orbs: 8° for the Sun and Moon; 6° for the other planets; 3° for minor aspects. APPLYING vs SEPARATING: if the faster planet is moving toward the exact angle, the aspect is APPLYING (its energy is building). If it is moving away, it is SEPARATING (releasing).
Lesson 2 of 4

The five major aspects

CONJUNCTION ☌ — 0°, orb 8°. Two planets fused. Neither hard nor soft on its own; quality depends on the planets involved. Intensity, blending. SEXTILE ⚹ — 60°, orb 6°. Easy, opportunity, talent that needs activation. Generally harmonious. SQUARE □ — 90°, orb 8°. Friction, tension, the productive challenge. The motor of growth. TRINE △ — 120°, orb 8°. Flow, ease, gift, sometimes laziness. Generally harmonious. OPPOSITION ☍ — 180°, orb 8°. Polarity, projection, the dance of opposites. Often appears in relationships. A simple rule: SQUARES and OPPOSITIONS = challenging (the chart's growing edges). TRINES and SEXTILES = supportive (the chart's gifts). CONJUNCTIONS take their color from the planets they unite.
Lesson 3 of 4

Minor aspects — a brief mention

Minor aspects are subtler harmonics. The most-used ones: • SEMI-SEXTILE (30°) and QUINCUNX / INCONJUNCT (150°) — awkward, adjustment required. • SEMI-SQUARE (45°) and SESQUI-SQUARE (135°) — friction at a smaller scale, irritation. • QUINTILE (72°) — creative talent, signature gift. Beginners should mostly focus on the five majors. Minors enter the picture once the basics are second nature.
Lesson 4 of 4

Reading an aspect grid

An ASPECT GRID is the upper-triangle matrix you see beside every modern chart. Planets are listed along both axes; each cell shows the aspect (if any) between the two. How to use it: 1. Start with the Sun row: every aspect to the Sun is a major chapter of the personality. 2. Then the Moon row: emotional landscape. 3. Look for clusters of squares (challenge) or trines (gift). 4. Notice the TIGHT aspects (small orb, often shown bold) — they speak loudest. 5. Look for PATTERNS: a T-square (two planets in opposition, both squared by a third), a grand trine (three planets in a triangle), a stellium (three or more planets in one sign or house). Aspect patterns are the chart's structural skeleton. Beginners can stop at the major aspects of personal planets; advanced readers map every dialogue.
